We currently tie jpegs, 300dpi, longest side of object captured in image 10in. (roughly 3000pixels x whatever) directly to TMS. Compressed file sizes are generally 1 to 2.5 megs each (a couple of exceptions can range up to 4 megs). Performance is fine, and most internal uses (ex: conservation record keeping) are satisfied with this level of quality.

For archival purposes and loaning out higher res images for publications, press, etc, original tiff scans (300-350dpi, 3000pixels) are saved offline on CD/DVD - not really connected to TMS other than marked as material is available in the media record.

What might be interesting to hear from people as well is how many sizes you generally save an image (both in TMS and out) for overall uses. I don't know about the rest of you, but there seems to be a new request for images every week that asks for a different size requirement.... sigh. We have thumbnails (produced by and stored in TMS), jpegs (in TMS), cleaned up and cropped tiffs (on CD/DVD), and original scans (with possible flaws from scanner and/or original artwork - on CD/DVD) - all 300-350dpi. But I've been playing around with a couple of other formats - two in particular - cropped, press-ready images and cropped, lower res web-ready images). We generally do not crop images so that all edges are recorded and visible.

Jennie:
We experimented with different size files to test this out, which is
something you might do, because performance is going to be related to
your own set up as much as anything. We did discover though that TMS
does not work at all if you give it something approaching 5 pixel
figures, x or y.

Subject: Image Sizes for TMS

Dear TMS Users:
I was wondering what size images you all load to TMS. We're
experimenting with large image files and are trying determine how large
we can go without sacrificing performance.

Until now our images for TMS have been small, less than 5MB, 150DPI.

Thanks in advance.
