Hi Jennifer,
We have mounted a touring Pacific tapa exhibition, featuring cloths from
Polynesia and Melanesia. We used large Japanese tissue hinges adhered
using starch paste, which were then taped to the reverse of a rigid
support for installation. The rigid support, made of sealed wood (though
we have also used Perspex for small tapa), extended 200-300mm down from
the top of the cloth depending on the size, thickness, weight etc. of
the individual tapa. This rigid support was then attached to the wall
using marine cleats. The system worked well for a touring show, as the
taped end of the hinges were simply cut from the support and then
re-taped at the following venue.
We have images of the various stages of the mounting process which I can
send you, and anyone else who is interested. It was obviously not
suitable for filmy or extremely long, narrow tapa (e.g. some Fijian
examples) which were instead displayed over a covered, padded dowel.
