Recently, the Head of Rights and Reproductions and myself at the Whitney
Museum have been wrestling with the idea of non-permanent collection pieces
and their image use on TMS. Our questions have been many and answers few.
I know that with many Rights and Reproduction agreements, it most certainly
covers Web use; but should it, or does it, cover the amount of time an image
can safely and legally stay on an institutional server? Say, for example a
piece that is not owned by the museum, is used for an exhibition and is
cataloged in TMS with a snapshot. After the show closes and goes away, is
the clock ticking on how long this image (just the image) can be viewable?
