Director of Conservation
Museum Resources Division, Department of Cultural Affairs


This position directs the centralized conservation program for four Santa Fe
Museums and the State Monuments Division of the Department of Cultural
Affairs (DCA). The incumbent reports to the Director of the Museum Resources
Division, DCA, and is responsible for directing, managing and supervising
conservation program and laboratory activities.  Primary responsibilities
include but are not limited to the following:

1.  Overseeing and managing all aspects of the Conservation Department’s
financial operations (state budget for conservation, revenue accounts and
private funds)

2.  Hiring, leading, overseeing and managing all Conservation Department
staff, interns and contractors

3.  Overseeing and implementing department policy and procedures; developing
and implementing short and long-range planning for
preservation/conservation; contributing to revisions in museum-wide
collection policy

4.  Securing funding (grant, revenue) for program operations and collection
preservation projects

5.  Advocating for the program and collections improvements on the museum,
DCA and state administrative levels.

6.  Forming partnerships with Museum and Monument Directors and staff to
develop preservation/conservation projects and institutional planning

7.  Participating in overall senior management of Museum Resources Division,
including policy setting and strategic planning, implementation and
evaluation

8.  Providing senior-level service in examination, documentation, analysis
and treatment of art conservation and preservation in area of specialty


The successful candidate will have:

A Master’s Degree and Advanced Certificate in art conservation

A minimum of 7 years post-graduate conservation experience in area of
specialization with 5 years managerial and supervisory experience (can be
included in the 7 years)

Strong leadership, interpersonal, planning, problem-solving and
organizational skills

Experience in the conservation of cultural materials

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Ability to develop, organize and manage multiple and complex projects

Ability to supervise, direct motivate and evaluate staff and interns

Experience in research and grant writing

Knowledge in a broad range of museum preservation and conservation issues,
including scientific and technical investigation/ analysis of materials of
art and artifacts

Knowledge of museum environment and how it impacts collections and historic
buildings; knowledge of relationships between environmental systems,
preservation and energy efficiency


Salary range is $38,180 - $67,879.  Excellent benefits include medical,
