 Here's the latest about the closet clothes-chewing culprit --

 One of the significant clues was the absence of droppings; they have
"latrine areas," he said, and they'll only defecate there. He's familiar
with this predicament having once discovered an SFS nesting in an office
closet at U. Florida in Gainesville.

He was going to check her closet again last evening. But in the meantime
my friend must check her pockets, purses, shoeboxes, etc; they're tiny,
shy, nocturnal creatures, and easily missed. It could be nesting in the
closet or it could be coming in at night to gather nesting materials. He
also suggested that she carefully check the closet vent, which is near
the ceiling, as that's a likely entrance point. Assuming an SFS is the
cause of the problem, and depending on whether she can determine where
it's living, she can either securely block the access point or set a
live trap and relocate it to a new home.

In the meantime, the home editor at the Miami Herald who is helping
friend with her problem, thanks all of you who responded so quickly with
great information. BTW, she also sided on the side of mice.
