Hi Lucille,

We enter media records for the physical records, then relate digital surrogates as child renditions (those "born digital" are simply entered without a physical parent get an attribute entry "Direct digital capture"). The physical media records note medium type (like Transparency) and size (like 4 x 5"), etc. This is handy as we can then track our physical media as we do our digital assets.

That said, I don't necessarily recommend the parent-child links like this because they are very limited. If we have a transparency that was used for multiple digital surrogates (like one overall view and one detail view of a signature), only one of the images can be used as the thumbnail in the media record and it's easy to miss these other digital images when outside the Media module. We also cannot represent a digital composite image from two parent physical sources in this manner (in which case we also use Remarks to note the source images).

What I would REALLY love is a way to create media-to-media associations, just as we do in object relationships. This would not only permit the kinds of physical-to-digital relationships as indicated above but would also be especially helpful when entering media records such as audioguide files, which might in turn be related to a narration audio track, several interview audio tracks, musical tracks, and sound effects.

Subject: Media Module

Hi Everyone,

I have a basic question and am hoping you can give me some guidance.
Where in the media module are you storing the information about the
source for the digital file i.e. 35mm color slide, 4x5"CT, born
digital etc? I was thinking about putting this information into Text
Entries, but I'm curious about what others are doing.

Thanks for your time!

Sincerely,

Lucille Stiger
