Thomas - there may be a lag between messages. Danielle sent a response
to this thread earlier today.

Here is my 2 cents, which you can consider the official Gallery Systems
response:

TMS Version 9.35 is supported under Vista starting with SP3. It has been
tested under both 32- and 64-bit versions of the OS. The only problem
with TMS 9.35 prior to SP3 was related to the Crystal Reports runtime.
We had to wait for them to release a bug-fix that worked under Vista.

As far as the issues being raised here by Brenda, Jeff and Cathryn, we
haven't seen these problems nor have I heard any reports from our
support group. I'll look into it with them. I know that Vista had many
problems that were resolved by the Vista SP1 release. SP2 for Vista was
released by Microsoft recently and resolves other problems. I don't know
what SP version of the OS you have installed. The SP1 release is very
stable and is the minimum requirement for TMS. The more specifics you
provide, the better.

Regarding the TMS DataView issues mentioned by Cathryn, I am curious
which version (and SP) of Internet Explorer you have installed. I
haven't experience this problem myself.

We have done early testing on Windows 7 (32 and 64) with good results. I
am using Windows 7 (64) on my 2 desktops and laptop and think it is very
good.

I agree that if you haven't yet migrated to Vista, it may make sense to
wait for Windows 7.

If your institutional policy is that you don't migrate to a new OS until
after SP1, you may want to just go to Vista SP2. According to current
reports, Windows 7 is expected to be released to manufacturing in the
next 2 weeks and will be released to retail in October. Since many
consider Windows 7 to be a service pack to Vista, this may impact the
policy of some institutions to always wait for the SP1 release. Sorry
that this is so convoluted.

One final thought: while it is not necessary, you could try setting the
Windows compatibility level on TMS to XP SP3 by right-clicking on the
museum.exe file in Vista Explorer, select properties and then the
compatibility tab.

Best,

Jay

I am coming back to this conversation a bit late, but has Gallery
Systems spoken up on Vista support? I seem to recall them stating to me
it was not supported/ready under Vista.

Has this changed?

I would second the vote of waiting on Vista for Windows 7 - I don't see
any advantage to an enterprise upgrade at this point. Still, I would
want to hear from Gallery Systems for a timeline to support Windows 7
with the client side app.

Best,
Thomas

Brenda,

If Vista is an absolute requirement there, it might be worth suggesting
to the technical services staff that they use Virtual PC to create a
virtual XP machine for the TMS users. That way you can run Vista on the
desktop, and still run TMS under XP. That should buy you some time
until Gallery Systems can figure out what to do with Vista.

It's really odd that they are forcing you into a Vista upgrade. The
smart money seems to be on sticking with XP and waiting for Windows 7
which is coming out soon.

Good luck.

Well, our technical services division is upgrading ALL our PCs to Vista,
so it's coming whether we want it to or not! It's good to be prepared
for what to expect however, so I appreciate your feedback.

Cathryn: interesting about the good performance. Are you on Service
Pack 3 or 4? I know 4 fixes some problems with User Defined Forms, but
I haven't heard anything about Data Views...

I have to agree - we've experienced oddities with custom data views
with TMS on Vista - data views that work fine on xp....we're on windows
servers and haven't noticed slower performance.

I would avoid Vista if possible; there are certainly no advantages to
using it.

Hi all,

The Getty is upgrading Getty staff computers to Windows Vista, and
during our testing with TMS we noticed that response times are markedly
slower than they are now -- general navigation in the system and running
queries appears to be a bit sluggish. I have heard that Vista in
general is markedly slower than previous versions of Windows, but I
wonder if there are any of you out there who have made this change
already and can confirm or deny?

And if you're running TMS on Oracle, could you mention that as well?

Many thanks,

Brenda
