For those using Photoshop, to resize an image to a defined maximum length regardless off whether the image is vertical/landscape or horizontal/portrait you can use Photoshop's "Fit Image". You get to it by going to the main menu bar FILE>AUTOMATE>FIT IMAGE. You'll get a dialog which prompts you to constrain the image within whatever pixel size you want for width and height. A nice additional option allows you to check a box which will keep the utility from enlarging an image that is smaller than the max size specified.

Fit Image can be set to run in an "action" to automate batch processing.

To convert imgaes of any kind, there is far more effective tools than photoshop, many of them can work in batch mode. Quite a few are freeware tools.
