Have you thought of using ABS sewer pipe as tubes.  It's what we use in 
the Clothing and Textiles collection.  You have to be careful that the 
supplier doesn't send PVC tubes because they both look the same - 
black.  We cover ours with cotton stockinette which comes in a tube 
shape.  It's easy to slide it over the ABS tubes.
