> We are looking for an experienced textiles conservator to join Te Papa's
> Conservation Team.
>
> Te Papa has active acquisition, loan and touring programmes and a
> regularly-changing exhibition programme for a large number of galleries.
> Textile conservators are involved in all these areas, supporting the full
> appreciation and accessibility of textiles from the History, Maori,
> Pacific, Art and Natural Environment collections.
>
> The Conservation Team of ten includes objects, textiles, paintings, paper
> and preventive conservators. The two textile conservators also work
> closely with collection managers and curators and with mountmaking and
> transit preparators. The conservation labs and workrooms are spacious
> and well equipped, and a central collections information system, KE EMu,
> is used to manage collection processes and documentation.
>
>
> A recognised professional conservation qualification and minimum of 5
> years' experience as a conservator in a Museum/Art Gallery environment is
> essential for this position. You will enjoy working co-operatively with
> other museum professionals, improving the well-being of a collection and
> finding creative solutions to making collections accessible in safe and
> culturally-appropriate ways. Te Papa is a bicultural organisation - our
> conservators need to be able to explore culturally- sensitive solutions
> to conservation issues and respect cultural and community values.
>
> You will be interested in both contemporary and historic collections and
> the materials from which they are made. Preventive conservation is
> important at Te Papa, but remedial conservation is also an essential part
> of the role. With such varied collections, it will be useful to bring a
> range of remedial conservation techniques and demonstrate an ability to
> draw on new approaches. Experience in working with taonga Maori and
> Pacific heritage items would be an advantage.
