After the Walters Art Museum converted from ARGUS to TMS, we had multiple constituents records for a single entity (including "after X", "style of X", "in the style of X", "in the manner of X" etc). Using the constituent xref features in TMS, we used a single constituent record and marked the attributions in either the prefix or the suffix field. We had a long discussion with the curators to conceptualize what those prefixes would be and how they were to be defined. The following is from the style guide:
Include any necessary prefixes or suffixes.
* Suffix "(?)" denotes that an attribution is uncertain.
* Prefix "Style of" denotes that the named constituent's style (ie, brushwork) was replicated.
* Prefix "After" denotes that the named constituent's choice of composition was replicated.
* Prefix "Copy after" denotes that both the named constituent's style (ie, brushwork) and choice of composition were replicated.
* Prefix "Formerly" denotes that the object was previously ascribed to the named constituent. In the Constituent Assistant, be sure to supply the dates that this was thought to be true, add any remarks, and uncheck "Displayed".
* If the constituent was responsible for the creation of a specific component of an object, enter the part (followed by a colon and space) as a prefix.
I hope that this helps.

Subject: Constituents in TMS - Roles
I am posting this on behalf of Dana Kreuger, Registrar, of the Emerson Gallery
at Hamilton College. Please reply directly to her at: [log in to unmask]
In circumstances where a work (painting, etc) is "after" or "attributed to" an
artist, how have others dealt with this within TMS? Do they create multiple
constituent records? Or do they add them to "role" when choosing
constituents in the object data entry screen? We have been placing labels
such as these in "Prefix" and "Suffix." These fields are found when editing a
constituent from the Object record. They are under "Constituent Assistant",
choose Edit, then "Cross-reference information". Is this a way that others
have attached such items as "attributed to" or "after"? If not, where have
others been placing these?
Also, if not, what do they place in those "Prefix" and "Suffix" spaces?
Thanks.
Anna
