I'm working on getting a manageable plan together to apply AAT terms in TMS here at the NGA, but before I meet with the powers that be, could I talk with you about your process, access / rights, timetable, and ongoing maintenance? I am usually in on Mondays and Wednesdays so I am happy to pop over the mall to meet when it's convenient for you.

At the Freer|Sackler, I have taken the path of borrowing the hierarchical structure of the AAT (and TGN for geography), but then using our own terms as vetted by our curators. This has been mostly for historical periods, geography, religious and pan-Asian philosophical terms, Asian ceramics, and attributes for visual works such as calligraphic scripts or painting formats. Too many to name here, actually.
This has worked well for us, and I am happy to share with anyone this might help.

Subject: Controlled Vocabulary for non-western collections
Hi Everyone,
I am wondering if there is any Encyclopedic or non-western collections that have identified a useful controlled vocabulary for the description of non-western art? How have you melded it with your more standard vocabulary like AAT, and which wins when there is a conflict? Is it reduced to a case by case basis? Our staff constantly complain that ATT is western focused and does not cover their needs fully, but no one has provided a useful solution.
