Hi Laura,
Since many Nations request that we strictly control what remains of their sensitive information in our files, we've actually created "Repatriated" as a separate department from our "Deaccessioned/Disposed" department in TMS. We still follow deaccession procedures for repatriated items, but our Repatriation files (both in TMS and physical form) can only be accessed by a select group of staff. Once repatriated, our external locations have a purpose designation of "Repatriated" as well. While we haven't had Nations state that they were uncomfortable with the term "deaccessioned" being associated with their items, most of our documentation is labeled as "repatriated" to acknowledge this different status.

How do you record objects repatriated to tribes? My initial instinct is to record it as a deaccession (removal from collections) but was told not to use the word deaccession in conjunction with repatriated items.

Hi Laura, we deaccession as required by our collections management policy. The Object Status in the object record is "Deaccessioned," the Disposition Method in the deaccession record is "Repatriation."
