Thanks Frances and Julie,

We are currently using the Geography Xref fields to link to the TGN, although our cataloguing standard so far has been to match the TGN Xrefs as closely as possible to the individual free-text Geography fields (so the individual Xref would be as specific as they could be within the limits of TGN). I think there would be a lot of curatorial (and other) concerns if the data was different between the two fields, because of the way the various departments access and search for data. However, we might have to rethink that.

Your mention of the Xrefs raises another question for us, however: how do we best convey uncertainty while using the Xrefs? So far we've been indicating 'possibly', 'probably' and 'or' in the remarks fields of the Xrefs, but that's not ideal at all. I am assuming that you are leaving this issue aside entirely and relying on the free-text for reports, labels, etc., which might end up having to be our solution. We are hoping, though, to use the Xrefs to create a more robust location searching capability for our website, since using they allow for a user to access any part of the hierarchy, not just the specific term they used.

Again, thanks for your suggestions; we have quite a few decisions to make, it seems!

Sarah

Are any of you in the discussion using the GeographyXref fields to link to the TGN as well as the individual Geography fields? This could be an option where a more specific location for searching is recorded in GeoXrefs and the version for printing on labels, etc., goes into the uncontrolled Geography fields.

Frances
