Hi all,
we, too, use the thesaurus structure for geographic entities. The historic place names are integrated as alternative labels (if +/- identical with the current place) or as descriptors with associations to other terms. As an attribute we always link the current name, but we have a text field for place of origin where the name appears in the form as it appears on the object or as it was at the time the object was created.
We build our thesaurus in a software that has more functions than the TMS thesaurus so not all of our information went into TMS (and we still have not tested the update procedure); at the moment I am looking for a place to put our mappings to other vocabularies (geonames, GDN, TGN) and/or geocoordinates / open street map links so if someone has already found a solution for this additional problem I would be very happy to hear about it.
Has somebody by chance already worked with https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gov.genealogy.net%2Fsearch%2Findex&data=05%7C02%7CTMSUSERS%40SI-LISTSERV.SI.EDU%7Cdbe6833c95a74ca94e3508dcce402167%7C989b5e2a14e44efe93b78cdd5fc5d11c%7C0%7C0%7C638612022641216185%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C60000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=r02zOc9nC%2FF6DOrNtycm3swu9VgWeJEjDphjBNZr860%3D&reserved=0 ?

Hi Stephanie,
We record our main geographic information in a customized Geography Xref thesaurus structure. And we developed procedures to deal with historic place names.
We differentiate between three different scenarios of historic place names. The attached 6-page memo explains our process.
Hope this is useful,
David

Hello,
I'm looking through the listserv to see how others are using the geography fields and ran across this post. Have others found creative solutions for reusing some of the geography fields like the post below? Do you currently enter multiple geography entries for historical and current geography names and flag the primary display? If you have customized the geography fields and/or have a guide for these fields that addresses things like qualifiers, historical geography and disputed territories that you are able to share it would be much appreciated!
Many thanks,
Stephanie Hansen
