Subject: Home Locations

Colleagues, I have a question concerning the use of home locations.

Does your institution assign home locations to objects in the collection? HP: Yes, this is a handy feature in TMS.

Why did you decide to use or not use this feature? HP: Mainly in order to quickly move a large group of objects back to their home location (which can be either a place in the storage, or a showcase in the permanent exhibition) after a temporary loan, as we are creating a location record for each loan venue (e.g. Museum X, Loan Y).

What issues does your institution face as a result of this decision? HP: Before every move to a temporary external location we'll have to check if a home location has been assigned to each object (otherwise they won't move back correctly).

How has this decision impacted staff workloads and their morale? HP: It hasn't. With every move the status of object locations is been checked and improved if necessary. Keeping the current locations of the objects up-to-date is just about the most important thing TMS does for us!

For comparison purposes, how large is your collection, and approximately how many movement trasactions occur on an average day? HP: 190.000, varying from 0 to some hundred.

Thank you all for your time and input. ~Chad
