Hi Everyone,

I am thinking about submitting a proposal to the AAM 2020 conference to talk about Mia's ongoing work on capturing diversity/equity data in TMS for the artists represented in our collection. Our work primarily involves (1) creating a survey to ask living artists about their self-identified gender identity, sexual orientation, ability/disability, and race/ethnicity, and (2) developing the tools in TMS to capture this information before enabling users to search or see stats about representation levels in our collections based on the information that is shared with us. You can read more about it here if you are interested: https://www.aam-us.org/wire/medium/documenting-diversity/. There are many, many questions still unanswered that we're exploring about how this will work, but it seems it might be a useful topic for the AAM conference since they picked-up/posted my article on their website in April.

Would anyone else out there like to join me in a panel session discussing something about documenting diversity as related to your collections/artists? The session proposals are due on 23 September, so there's no time to lose! (Sorry this call is coming so late.) If you are interested, please get in touch with me ASAP.

And if you aren't interested in presenting but want to talk about what we're doing at Mia, please get in touch. We'll probably aim to talk about it at the next Collective Imagination conference as well. My colleague Heidi Raatz will be speaking about it at the VRA 2020 conference.

All the best,
Frances
