Anne,
I had a bibliography index in my FIT-SUNY Leather Preservation thesis
on Identification of Leather. There is an excellent book with photos, I
don't remember the exact title, Leather Identification, english
publisher?  Its listed in the thesis and the chapter review would give
you an idea, if you call the F.I.T. library, they may xerox that
section.
I'm sorry I'm away from home so I can't look up any specifics.
