Educators, please join us virtually next Wednesday at 1pm as we present the National Youth Summit on the Dust Bowl. We have a terrific panel of speakers lined up to answer questions from students around the country, including at 10 Smithsonian Affiliate museums. Registration is free, and pre-and post-summit materials are available on the site. We’d love if you’d be willing to pass this along to your communities of teachers and educators and help us spread the word!

Many thanks!
The 2012 National Youth Summit Team

This summer the U.S. suffered the worst drought in 50 years, causing the government to declare one third of the nation a federal disaster area and sparking comparisons to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. On October 17, 2012, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Endowment for the Humanities will engage thousands of middle and high school students in a national dialogue with renowned filmmaker Ken Burns<redir.aspx?C=f626e8229706495fa0a3a1c5846df94a&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.pbs.org%2fkenburns%2fdustbowl%2f> and environmental experts to discuss contemporary environmental issues and the legacy of the Dust Bowl. The National Youth Summit invites students to talk about what we have learned from the Dust Bowl and generate ideas for how each of us can be a responsible environmental steward.

Presenters:
Cara Santa Maria, Host, Huffington Post Science Correspondent
Ken Burns, Filmmaker
Cal Crabill, Dust Bowl survivor
Roy Bardole, Farmer, Chairman of the United States Soybean Export Council
Deb Peters, Research Ecologist, Agricultural Research Service, USDA
Glenn Roberts, Founder, Anson Mills

Presented by the National Museum of American History, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and WETA Television, in collaboration with Smithsonian Affiliations.
