For the past several years, the Conservation On Line "Cool" website at
Stanford University has provided archive service for the Textile
Conservation Discussion list. The University has decided, for economic
reasons, to close the website in its entirety. The American Institute
for Conservation has offered to pick it up and to host all the services
of Conservation on Line. There will be a disruption of a few days as the
website and its contents are transferred; access to the Tex Cons
archives will not be available. Access to active Textile Conservation
Discussion list's postings and replies, available through the
Smithsonian Institution, will continue.

Summary: No action required. Textile Conservation discussion list
continues. Archives will be inaccessible beginning July 15, 2009 for a
few days.

Subject: Update on Conservation OnLine and the Conservation DistList

Dear DistList Community,

Following is an update regarding the status of the Conservation
DistList and CoOL. We are currently working to move the Conservation
DistList, CoOL, email list groups, and all other associated web
resources to a new server. Thanks to the efforts of Walter Henry and
John Burke, and to the generous cooperation of Stanford University
Libraries, this process has been progressing smoothly.

The CoOL/DistList resources have been hosted via a complex system of
software and server specifications, and are run on multiple
operating systems, now outdated. It is necessary to transfer this
material to a more up-to-date Linux-based system. While this process
is challenging, we hope that it will result in a better, more
secure, more permanent version of CoOL.

Our current plan is to initiate the physical transfer of servers
beginning on Wednesday, July 15, 2009. We expect to experience a
period of down time for all the abovementioned resources, lasting at
least several days. We will make every effort to have CoOL, the
DistList, email groups, and the other materials back up and running
as soon as possible.

For updates, visit the AIC website

    <URL:http://www.conservation-us.org/cool>

or the main page of CoOL

    <URL:http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/>

As these resources come back online, we will send messages to the
DistList with status updates, and point you to the new web addresses
for the CoOL resources.

Thanks to so many of you for your words of encouragement through
this process, and for your patience.

Sincerely,

The Board and Staff of the
American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works
