I had to try to look up how you were defining "virtual" and still not sure. We also use a tripartite system for all artefacts but we affix a letter in front e.g. main collection "M", "WC" working collection, "RM" reproduction, "MX" source unknown. We also use letters for components but they are upper case. Then a fourth number if it has to be broken down further. e.g. M2017.1.1 A.1 box, top is A, removable knob or ribbon from box top would be A.1 because it belongs to the unit known as box top.

Subject: Virtual Object Numbering Systems

Hello All,

Would anyone be willing to share their numbering systems for virtual objects? It's not something we've really dealt with here and I'd like to know how some others are handling it before I try to write a style guide for it. We currently use a tripartite numbering system (2017.001.001) and use lower case letters in the case of components (2017.001.002-a).

Thank you for any help.

Best,
Abby
