Yikes! What a can of worms...

I guess the question then is - is the Company listed on the record a manufacturer (they did the pressing), a publisher (they published the music), a recording studio, a producer, or a distributor (they sent off copies to people who ordered them).  I suppose they could be all of those choices!

I'm still thinking Publisher as the Role is probably correct for the items in the Warhol collection, if we ever want to map this data to MARC - since the MARC field (260) is the place for information regarding publishers, distributors, issuers, printers (not fine art printer - but books/serials), producers, and manufacturers.  I'm using the terms "Publisher" and "Manufacturer" only in Role, as the generic terms for this MARC 260 field, and using the suffix field to qualify the role.

Ella, I hope this tangent on your original question isn't too unhelpful - maybe however, you could list them as "Contributors" or  something generic like "record company" or "recording company"?

Hello

I think with music its quite common for the maker of a record to be distinct from the publisher of the music; the distributer is often distinct as well. And what about producers and engineers? :) I guess sorting out depends on how you use 'Roles'.

Hi Ella -

These are the Roles that we use in TMS:
Contributor
Copyright Holder
Manufacturer
Primary Maker
Publisher
Secondary Maker
Source
Subject Associated
Subject Depicted/About

I use mainly the Display Suffix field to explain the role of the person or organization.  For example:

Primary Maker: Andy Warhol (artist)
Secondary Maker: Rupert Jason Smith (printer)
Subject Depicted/About: Julia Warhola (depicted)

If your question is about a phonograph record, and the role of the Record Company which published it - for all of the phonograph records in our collection, I have the Record Company's listed as publishers.
Publisher: Elektra/Asylum Records (publisher)

I think it is correct according to the library MARC format, to list Record Company's in the Role of "Publisher", although it's possible that in the Display Suffix field - they should be listed as "distributor" instead of "publisher".

Does anyone out there have an opinion about Record Company's as publishers vs. distributors...?

Subject: role question

We have a Bruce Nauman record in the collection for which we are trying to come up with an appropriate role for the company that actually produced the record.  (Bruce Nauman's role is artist).  We have used maker, manufacturer, and publisher before in TMS, but I'm not sure that those are appropriate for this case.  I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions or thoughts on what the object-related roles should be.

Thank you,
