again
Very high resolution
digital images exist for almost all our collection, the few exceptions being
those works that are very difficult to move and those that have been on long
term loan to other institutions for a long period. This is due to two
factors.
1)
The National Galley
collection is small; only 2301 objects, mostly
paintings.
2)
In the 1990s the
Gallery’s Scientific Dept participated in a European Union project (the MARC
Project) to develop a format for capturing very high quality digital images of
art works. In 2001 our Photographic Dept used the MARC technology to digitise
the whole collection. Since then they have managed the creation and
dissemination of derivatives from these master images for an increasing number
of Gallery purposes (e.g. separate tailored sets of JPG format derivatives for
public-facing systems such as the website, interactive kiosks and the
‘print-on-demand’ retail system). TMS displays JPEG derivatives; the master
images are catalogued in a separate Photographic Dept database that was
developed in-house and is integrated with TMS. Scientific Dept continue to
research image technology and to find new ways of applying and extending the
uses of the MARC master images.

Subject: images again
Everyone,
After writing my last email
regarding images, I was curious – what percentage of your collection has a
digital image in TMS? My Museum has just over one-third with images.
Is this on par with others? Are there museums out there with 100% image
representation, and if so, how did you accomplish
that?
