Hi all - I'm not sure I have the capability to follow what he is saying - but perhaps this will help others?

(Can you post the following on the TMS list serve for me. I was forwarded this issue and am responding back to you but I am not part of the list serve group and somehow can't get it to post. But I think this might help you and others with your question.)

Regarding using the original source image -
We have created some pretty intense reports using the original image instead of the thumbnail. Our current reports print the large original images in different scales and actually goes as far as to perfectly center each image on the page (which is something that can't be done with the thumbnail
image.)
The formula we created uses an OLE object that finds the image by assembling the filepath and filename in its formula. (That simply finds the image.) We then scale it to the size we want. The next step uses a combination of the pixel width of the image (which TMS records in its file information) divided by whatever scale we are currently using, then divided by the images dpi setting, then subtracts from the actual pixel width of the page (which is designated by you for the report), divides that number by 2 and then that number multiplied by a "TWIP" (1440). That final number is used to place the upper left corner of that image at a specified distance from the left side of the report. It is a pretty complex formula but is very understandable when you break it a part.  (I can provide further detail on this if you
like.)
HOWEVER!!!!! - there are some glitches to this formula. TMS takes note of the pixel height and the pixel width of the image but fails to take note of the original DPI setting for an image. So for this complex formula to actually work successfully on all images, it requires that all images be set at the same DPI setting. Also, another thing that TMS fails to do is to refresh an image's detail information. (I love the fact that you can now right-click and edit the original source image and resave to improve it.
Unfortunately if you change the size in any way of that original source image, you need to go back into the media object and re-select that image for the new information to take effect.) Honestly, I would love for TMS to add the DPI setting for an image to its File information so that it can be used in the above formula and make it work on all images regardless of DPI settings. This is just my two cents if any of them are reading this... Honestly though, the 100% scaling of the 72 DPI setting for the thumbnail images that is supposed to be an improvement on the TMS 9.35 SP2 really only makes our objects look like crap.
Best,
Cornelius

Hi there,

I am also very interested in the answer to Suzanne's question - now
that we will be moving to Crystal XI when upgrading to TMS 9.35, I'd
like to get away from having to use embedded thumbnails in report and
use filename/path instead.  Our on-line files are of varying sizes and
sources, so I'd like to do the scaling in the report rather than in the
image (for example, scaling to a 2-inch square space and maintaining
aspect resolution, regardless of the source image size).

I'm trying to avoid scaling all the images with photoshop in advance of
using the report (I would have to identify which images needed scaling).
Also each fact sheet will have to incorporate not just the image but
also selection of fields (all the "boiler plate" stuff) - and I want to
be able to generate the report using an object package.

Unless you think I can scale dynamically within Crystal?

Still hopeful....

Hi all,

I'm working on creating a fact sheet to 'print out' as a pdf.

 Using crystal 11.

Here is the rub.  My 3300+ images range between 100KB and 4MB.

Have any of you found a way to dynamically adjust the scaling of an
image depending on its file size?

Thanks for any little pointers (or big ones!)
