Furniture and ceramics are “gilded” and metals are “gilt”.
But we never gild the lily!

Here, ceramics curators tend to use the term gilding while metals
curators use gilt, as in gilt lining, silver gilt, etc. Not much help I
am afraid.

We use both gilt and gilded. Many of our curators use gilt as
a noun, as in “silver and silver gilt”, “gilding”, as well as “gilded and
polychromed wood”
Not to mention those who use guilt as a weapon…

Do
you have any policies concerning the use of the terms guilding, gilt or gilded?
I would like to standardized these within our institution, and am trying to
find out what other museums are doing.
