If Archive deletes is checked for that Attribute Type, you have to delete the term twice. If you right-click over the Attributes control on the Objects record, you'll see a choice of Show Inactive in the pop-up menu. You can also query for the object(s) by 'Thesaurus Cross-Reference Type (Attributes) - inactive)' to find those records (you may have to add this search field in configure query groups).

Hmmm… Crazy thought… Try checking the Constituent Record, and see if it shows up in Attributes there. Sometime things get parked in weird places during conversions.

You could also run a SQL query to determine which record was still using this term.

I deleted the term from the Object record.  But when I tried to delete the term from Thesaurus Manager I get the following message:

“The current term is in use by the following tables: Thesaurus Xrefs (Objects): 1 times.  Cannot delete.”

It just bothers me to see items on a list that will never be used (sort of like my relationship with raisins in the supermarket – why can’t they just disappear when I enter the store!).

Hi Noel,

If these names are listed under the 'Authorities' section of your thesaurus, they can be deleted. You just need to first make sure that they have all been deleted from the object records. You can then delete the terms from the thesaurus - starting with the lowest level and working your way up (i.e., you have to delete any child terms before you can delete its parent).

Subject: Deleting Attribute Type and Attribute Term data

Dear TMS Users:

I would like to know if it is at all possible to permanently delete an Attribute Type (from table: Thesaurus Xref Types; field: ThesXrefType) and an Attribute Term (from table: Terms; field:Term) from your in-house Thesaurus.

Let me explain: many years ago, before myself or my predecessors fully understood the relational power of TMS, El Museo created an Attribute Type named “Personality.”  Under “Personality” are Terms that are the names of certain historic figures.  For instance, if we had a photograph that depicted John Doe we would use the Attributes feature in the Objects module by 1st selecting “Personality” as the Attribute Type and 2nd by selecting “John Doe” as the Attribute Term.

(This particular set-up is no longer necessary since “John Doe” can be entered in the Constituents module and you simply link the John Doe – Constituent record to the object record as an object-related constituent and define the role of “John Doe” to this object record as “depicted.”)

One is not allowed to delete Attribute Types and Attribute Terms from the Thesaurus Manager (they can be de-activated so that they don’t appear as search options in Advanced Query).  Is there a way to permanently delete an Attribute Type and Attribute Term?  The fact that the Attribute Type and Attribute Term is still visible/listed in the Thesaurus Manager can, in my opinion, cause confusion – no?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated,
