Hi Alexandra,

We’re in the process of setting up our library as well. At first, we were using ISBN numbers as the numbering system, but once we realized just how many duplicate books we had, we switched to an in-house system (LIB.#). We’ve created labels for the books that have their LIB# as well as their call number and shelve them according to call number. The call number and ISBN numbers are in the Alternate Numbers area of the Bibliography Module (along with the ISBN number). The LIB.# is just an easier way (for us at least) to keep track of them on TMS, especially when duplicates are involved.

We also photograph the book cover and add it to record for easier reference when looking at the shelves. Unfortunately, Gallery Systems didn’t think to add a circulation section to the bibliography module, so when someone needs to check books out, we have to go through the Media Module (which is really inconvenient, but not a terribly big deal seeing as we upload the book cover images anyway).

We don’t use the heading section, although I suppose you could use it for categories of books? Since we’re an art museum, all of ours tend to be art books, but I suppose you could get more specific with the heading.  The most important things to us are the numbers and the title/author.

Hope this helps!

Subject: Bibliography Module/Museum Library

Hello Everyone,

I would like to know how some other institutions use Bibliography Records.  Namely, I want to know what others use the “heading” field for.  Also, what kind of numbering system do you use for the reference number found at the very top of the record?

We are beginning a small resources library here and will be looking books up by call number so I would like an easy way to identify books through the bibliography module.  Do any other institutions use TMS to catalog their resources?  Please let me know any helpful tips or advice you have!

I look forward to reading responses.
