Hi Chad,
Thanks so much. This helps greatly since our database is a
muddle of everything and neither Ashley, the Collections Manager, nor I were
here when TMS was installed.
On another note, I wrote about two weeks ago after a training
session with Annie, that we need to have all administrative restrictions taken
off of TMS at this time. We don’t have an IT dept. and Jennifer Wilson,
our CFO, has given full permission to do this. We only have Ashley and I
working in TMS and per Annie we have a lot of clean-up etc. to do in the
database before we can upgrade to TMS 10. I never heard from anyone so I’m
appealing to you to help us expedite this. Annie said someone there can
go into the system and take off all the administrative restrictions for us.
Thanks again.
Alice

Subject: Re: Entering Constituents with particles in name
Alice,
Names are always complicated because there is more then one naming methodology:
in China the family precedes the given name, unlike in Anglo-American formats.
I did a quick survey of ULAN and LOC, and in most cases the name of the form
"Last, First" moved the "von" to the end of the name:
ie: Brink, Herman van den; or Vecht, Nicholas van de.
This is not a hard and fast run as, there is also "Van Vorhees,
Tracy" in the ULAN.
Even famous names, such as "Gogh, Vincent van" and "Vinci,
Leonardo da" run counter to collective recognition.
So, in short, there is no right or wrong answer. Keep in mind that the First
and Last name fields are for searching purposes, and that unless you have some
very customized reports, TMS uses two fields for displaying names: Display Name
and Sort Name. If these are done properly, you can have "van" in
either the First, Middle and/or Last name fields, and TMS will still function
properly.
Hope this helps.

Hi
All,
We
are currently using TMS Light 9.35. We are hoping to upgrade to TMS 10 but need
to clean up the database which is filled with multiple entries for many
constituents. We are wondering how some of you are entering artists’ last
names in the constituent module when you have particles in the name e.g.
“van or de / Van or De.” How do you enter the full name in the Constituent
screen “first, middle and last” names with particles.
Thanks
for any guidance you can send our way.
