We use the Getty's Art and Architecture Thesaurus: http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/aat/index.html

From our Data Dictionary:

Field: Object Name

Attributes: free-text, short; alpha-numeric

Access: system admin

Description: Descriptive generic name for the object (usually more specific than Classification field).

Example: watercolors

Data-Entry Conventions: Optional. Available during new object creation and on object front card. Use Ctrl + Insert to access thesaurus for terms. Can be more specific than Classification (like Print/lithographs or the same as Classification (like: Painting/paintings). [Although the Object Name field is designed to allow users to type data freely into the field, you can use the Thesaurus Lookup Tool to enter an Object Name from the Thesaurus]

Hope that gives some insight.

Does anyone use the Object Name field regularly? If so, what standardized nomenclature do you use to populate it? And at what level of the nomenclature? Does anyone have data entry standards for this field you would be willing to share?

Thanks,

Michelle
