We also based our object names loosely on the AAT and have built a separate simpler version from the Getty within the Thesaurus Manager. Our object names are sentence case and are singular terms unless the accessioned object is componentized. We deal with different versions of the object name through equivalent terms in the thesaurus.

For those interested, we express object names and genres in LIDO through the objectWorkType element, with the conceptIDs being the terms’ AAT unique identifiers:

<lido:objectClassificationWrap>

<lido:objectWorkTypeWrap>

<lido:objectWorkType>

<lido:conceptID lido:source="AAT" lido:type="Object name">300033618</lido:conceptID>

<lido:term>painting</lido:term>

</lido:objectWorkType>

<lido:objectWorkType>

<lido:conceptID lido:source="AAT" lido:type="Genre">300015637</lido:conceptID>

<lido:term>portrait</lido:term>

</lido:objectWorkType>

We use the Object Name sub-field (not the first one) for 2 types of data: genres and object names.

These are 2 finite controlled vocabularies (13 genre terms), mostly derived from the Getty’s AAT (for object names) with an eye toward cross-collection queries.  For example instead of using the genre “history painting” we use “historical subject” so that genre can be used for finding paintings and drawings.

We would be interested in this too. We do use the Object Name field but have some variations in the field that should be unified.

Does anyone use the Object Name field regularly? If so, what standardized nomenclature do you use to populate it? And at what level of the nomenclature? Does anyone have data entry standards for this field you would be willing to share?

Thanks,

Michelle
