Assistant/Associate Conservator/The Costume Institute Department




General Description:
The Assistant/Associate Conservator will assist the Costume Institute's Conservation team with object preparation and research for the Spring 2014 Costume Institute exhibition.  Duties include examining and documenting artifacts with condition and treatment reports, materials analysis, pattern-taking, creation of reproductions, conducting treatments and photography.  This full-time position has an end date of May 31, 2014.


Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
*       Undertake the treatment and research of costume & textile objects related to the spring 2014 Costume Institute Special Exhibition
*        Carry out condition reports/treatment records, photography for 2014 exhibition artifacts
*        Contribute to research and publication activities related to 2014 exhibition
*        Other related duties

Requirements and Qualifications:
Experience and Skills:
*        Demonstrated experience and knowledge historic costume and textile treatment and preservation
*        Excellent manual skills, with particular experience in the sewing of high fashion clothing
*        Ability to create and take patterns
*        Comprehensive knowledge of haute couture sewing techniques and construction methods
*        Knowledge of fashion history
*        Proven ability to create, modify and dress mannequins according to conservation protocols
*        Ability to document treatments, perform scientific & material analysis of objects in order to assess conservation requirements of artifacts
*        Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
*        Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
*        Preference and experience in working in a collaborative environment

Knowledge and Education:
*        Graduate degree from a recognized conservation training program or equivalent qualifications and experience in costume textile conservation
*        Strong knowledge of conservation principles, ethics, materials and techniques for costume conservation with demonstrated high standards of conservation treatment experience
*        Required, minimum of 3 years as a practicing conservator; Museum experience favored
