When adding a new option to the dynamic sorting or grouping parameter you need to do the following three things:

1. Make sure the field is available in the report, adding the appropriate tables and joins as required
2. Edit the parameter, to include the new option for dynamic sorting or grouping. In canned reports, there may be 4 or 5 parameters for grouping or sorting, each of which need to be edited.
3. Edit the sorting or grouping formulas, to equate the parameter value with the proper field output in each of the formulas. As with the parameters, canned reports may require editing 4 or 5 formulas.

This should give you a pretty good roadmap to follow, and if you have mastered the "IF ... THEN... ELSE" formula in Crystal, shouldn't be that hard to implement.

That said, you are trying to organize your report by locations. Since objects don't have locations, but rather components have locations, just beware that you will have repetition of object records which have multiple components. You may want to include some optional component information (such as name), so avoid confusion.

Coincidentally, dynamic sorting and grouping are topics that are covered in the Crystal Reports class. This was new feature introduced as of TMS 2010.  I know that many people learned Crystal Reports prior to it's release. You may want to consider registering for the Crystal Reports class, or expressing your interest for a refresher/advanced training class with your account manager.

Hi Kate,

If you're not using crates/containers or the free-text fields on the locations data entry screen with your locations entries, I recommend adding the Locations table to the report and adding the locationstring field to your report's sort formula - the LocationString provides a concatenation of the location hierarchy fields, but doesn't include the level/sublevel free text fields or container data.

Hello TMS wizards,

I’m currently trying to add a sort parameter option to our Inventory Report.  The existing report already has some sort parameters, but I want to be able to sort the report by Current Location.  Does anyone know how to add that field as a parameter value? Do I need to change the way “Location” is listed in Crystal Reports first?  I’d greatly appreciate your advice!

Thank you,

Kate
