(Partial) Samuel H. Kress Fellowship in Upholstery Conservation
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation,
Bureau of Historic Sites, Peebles Island Resource Center, Waterford, NY

The New York State Bureau of Historic Sites, is pleased to offer a 12-week Kress Conservation Fellowship (to complete an unfinished Kress Fellowship) in upholstery conservation.  The focus of the Fellowship will be to examine, research, document, and treat a set of early 19th century chairs from Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site that now have modern upholstery and fabric. In preparation for the site’s centenary as a New York State Historic Site in 2017, Schuyler Mansion staff is working to improve the interpretation of the site; treatment of these chairs is part of that project.

The Fellowship will afford the successful candidate the opportunity to expand his or her knowledge of upholstery methods and styles and upholstery conservation techniques.  In addition, the Fellow will assist with other upholstery conservation projects in the textile and furniture labs and travel with Peebles Island conservators to a few of the New York State Historic Sites, gaining perspective on the needs of upholstered furniture collections in historic house museums.

The Fellowship is open to recent graduates of a recognized training conservation program in the U.S. or Canada, or a U.S. citizen with a graduate degree in conservation from an overseas program.  Applicants should have experience in textile and/or upholstery conservation. Students who will complete their graduate degrees in 2015 are eligible to apply. The stipend for this partial Fellowship is $ 9,000.

Please submit a cover letter stating your interest in the position, your curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation to Deborah Trupin, Textile Conservator, via email at [log in to unmask]  While the time frame for the Fellowship is flexible, the deadline for application materials is July 1, 2014.

This Fellowship is funded by a grant from Samuel H. Kress Foundation to the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation.
