That’s our current tactic actually…we have the skills in-house, but IT folks have everything locked down. Trying to convince the powers that be that they need to insist that we have some control. Frustrating to be a db admin, but not be able to get on your servers….<sigh> …that’s the end of my Friday pity-party…sorry to the rest of you getting sucked into the string J

Everyone have a great weekend!

Diane,

who is it you would ask permissions from? Perhaps they'd do it for you, if they have the skills? Else, nominate your most tech savvy (or simply willing) staff member to learn some basics. Then convince them to give you permission for that one person, promise to always back everything up before making any changes... You'd be amazed at the data cleaning & augmentation you can do in minutes versus months (or years).

No permission L - and IT contractors, so we have to pay them for any jobs, and I’m trying to avoid that if possible.

I will save your email though David, in the misguided hope that someday they’ll let us on!!

Thanks!

Diane.

A tiny bit of SQL goes a long way! You could update those 5,000 records in less time it took to ask the question. (I realize you have to have permissions to access the server, which is probably not the case with most folks).

Update Objects

Set Cataloger = ' [cataloger's name] '

Where ObjectNumber in ( [list of ObjectNumbers separated by commas] )

Perhaps someone in your IT department can do you a (VERY) quick favor?

Boo on not being able to do it – and yes, this would be an extremely useful feature!!

Thanks all for the replies – and maybe Gallery Systems will give us a present and it’ll be in TMS2014! Not that’ll it’ll help me for the 5000ish record project I’m working on this summer…..

Funny this appears now - I was also trying to perform this (unsuccessfully) earlier this week and had started an email to send out and see if anyone else knew of a way to do this. It would be extremely useful and time saving!

Thanks,

Karen

Diane -

Our understanding is that you cannot search on null and replace with data using Search/Replace, but we have asked Gallery Systems to work on adding this function. Our users could really use this.  Perhaps if others chime in it might encourage making this happen :)

Hello all –

Wondering if anyone has any tricks for me. I’m working on groups of bulk loaded records, and trying to update the Cataloguer Field using the Search and Replace utility. Currently the field has nothing in it, and I want to add the cataloguers name to all the records so we don’t have to do it record by record.

I am able to do it when there is something in the field, but if I don’t put anything in the Search it just sits there and doesn’t do a thing.

Anyone have any ideas what I could put into the field to get it to work?

Thanks!

Diane.
