Hello everyone,

My friend and brilliant colleague, Kristen Schuster, is working on a digital edition of Vetusta Monumenta.  I have assisted her with answering some questions, but I suggested reaching out to a larger pool of working professionals to get their take on her current conundrums.  Please find below her list of questions for you to consider and possibly provide input on.  It’s greatly appreciated!

Project description

The digital edition of Vetusta Monumenta is seeking to use high resolution scans from the first three volumes of the original text to build an interactive digital resource that is freely available to scholars from a variety of disciplines.

Currently the project uses Scalar to house textual commentaries about plates and visualize relationships between text and images.

Image types the project uses

Currently the project is using JPEG files housed in the Internet Archives. These files have been transformed from 600 ppi Tiff files into 350 ppi Jpeg files (1700 resolution for the long side of the image).

Image types we are thinking of using

In order to apply zooming capabilities to the Jpeg files we are contemplating converting files to Jpeg 2000s and then using Open Seadragon for zooming capabilities.

Questions for the listserv

Scalar, the digital asset management system the project is using, does not support Jpeg 2000 of Tiff files with a compression type applied to them. Does anyone have suggestions for resources that could read Jpeg 2000 files or Tiff files with compression online?

Perhaps a more important question would be: Do you recommend using jpeg2000 for web projects? Is it practical to use compressed Tiff files?

Thank you for your time, I look forward to comments and suggestions!

Kristen Schuster
