I would be very interested in the DAMS-project as well. We had a look at Extensis Portfolio earlier this year and it seems that an integration with TMS could be done.

As for the TIFFs: we also only link (original sized) JPGs to TMS, we don’t reduce them in size / resolution. Our TIFF-files are stored on a separate server, but documented through the Archival Media tab.

Kindest regards,
Dieter

I would be interested as well.

And we currently do Jpegs as everyone else, with the location of the archival tiff indicated in the media record.
One thing we have done, for a recent map project where you really do need to zoom in, is to create basically high res jpegs to attach - save the tiff as a JPEG without reducing the resolution or size at all. The file is remarkably smaller so will open without too much of a wait, but is still very clear when zooming in. Only doing this in certain cases, but has worked well.
Diane.

Caitlin,

Excellent insight! Your current status quo is just like mine. I had contemplated if a DAM would provide a benefit to accessing TIFFs, and so it may based on your hopeful changes! Do keep me informed as you transition!

Hi Sarah,

We currently create our original images as TIFF files, save them on an archived server, and upload converted JPEGS to TMS for the size issues you mention. We will be moving to a DAMS program in the next year however, where TMS images would come directly from that source rather than our current server. So after our DAMS integration, we may begin linking the TIFF files rather than JPEGS.

For now though, we do have the TIFF files available to share with exhibit designers or publications as needed. Just on a request basis.

Subject: Linking TIFFs through TMS

Hello All,

I’m curious to know who has decided to link their TIFFS to TMS for internal access? When I was at the MFA, Boston, I remember seeing TIFF files available for access, but TMS crashed a lot there and I wasn’t sure if it was due to the collection size (enormous, but awesome) or if it was due to the TIFFs, which are large files themselves.

I wanted to know if any other institutions have had technical snafus since linking TIFFs. I’m trying to make image access as easy as possible for staff, an sometimes curators prefer TIFFs over JPEGs to zoom in.

Our collection size it only about 38,000 objects, which has me leaning to thinking that it’s possible, but any feedback is greatly appreciated!
