Everyone, I'm sure that in your work in your respective states, you meet groups that are interested in developing new museums or other public facilities. Sometimes communities jump into this before considering all of the pertinent issues involved in sustaining a public facility or having a long-term idea of where they're heading. Here is a really interesting new seminar on determining the feasibility for creating a new museum or interpretive center. The course poses some important questions these emerging organizations should ask themselves. In many states, you may have a field services office affiliated with a larger historical society or state museum that can provide similar assistance to a group considering organizing as a museum. But if not, this is a good start for better understanding the issues public institutions face and it's quite inexpensive. Doing a feasibility analysis before deciding to build new facilities helps provide a reality check before you commit to new construction and the related operation costs.
