The attached is a photo of one of several  sashes associated with the Orange order which are being considered for acquisition. We are not certain of the date or place of manufacture, but believe it to be probably early 20^th century. The verso of the sash is finished with a shiny black coating, which resembles patent leather. As you can see, it has become firmly adhered to itself where folded. In several places, it has lifted , revealing a plain weave jute-like fabric below. The recto side is finished in red satin. The finish has no particular odour, remains  quite evenly shiny, and is only very slightly tacky. I’m an objects conservator and I’m hoping one of the textiles specialists on this list can help me identify what this finish is, and give me some guidance in how I might release the areas where it has adhered to itself and prepare the item for flat storage.
