Hi Everyone,

Working on implementing TMS (and the barcode manager/utility) and wondering about other institutional choices and experiences regarding the following:
  1. Has anyone chosen using 2d/Matrix (or QR codes) instead of 1D (linear alpha-numeric) ones?  If so, in addition to 2D's ability to store more information (and within a smaller footprint), and more robust error correction, were there any other considerations that weighed in to the decision?
  2. Discussions and research suggest purchasing Thermal Transfer printers over a Direct Thermal models, and using freezer grade label stock, but wondering about label stock (including their adhesive) considerations with respect to conservation.  Are they considered "archival".  Has anyone chatted with those in conservation (ie/ CCI, AIC, Smithsonian, ...) about any specific brands?
  3. What barcode designer software did you purchase/use?
  4. With an increase in the use of portable technology like tablets and cell phones, what are the pros & cons of employing these devices as scanners?  Did anyone decide to supplement scanner purchases and use by using tablets/iPads, and cell phones, and if so, how well is it working?  If not, what were you considerations when purchasing a dedicated scanner (data stored within unit for download, WiFi capable within a secure or VPN environment,...)?
  5. Are institutions using barcode technology solely for collection inventory and tracking movement or, in the case of tablets, have you been able to use this portable technology as multi-functioning pseudo-workstations (scan, data-entry, etc), to work on collections at a storage facility, in the field, etc....?
Thanks in advance to all advice and feedback,
