Hi Brian, I just recently changed our procedure for this. We give all incoming loan objects (long-term loans, conservation, study) a T number. In the past, every time an object went back to the lender for a period of time, it received a new T number when it came back. Now that we are using the Loan Module, an object will get a T number the first time it enters the building. This will be its number going forward, much like an accession number. Every time it comes back on Loan it will get a new loan record, but the T number will stay the same. The only catch is we have to remember to double check if the object has been on loan before.
(This may not be the handled the same way for objects that come in as exhibition loans, which are now receiving an E number. We just recently started using the Exhibition Module and are working out best practices for that as we go along.)
I'd be happy to discuss this further.
Terry

Subject: Object lent again after being returned to lender

Hi All,

How does everyone prevent redundancies for object records that were once lent to your institution, returned to the lender, much time passes, and the object is lent to your institution again?

I am trying to think of a programmatic or at least semi-programmatic way to stiff this out.

Any thoughts are welcomed.

Thanks,
Brian
