We have experienced something like this. We used the existing location authority, changed the name, and put some notes in the location's Description field such as "room previously known as the North Gallery." We have an external location that has a new name, but nothing has physically changed with the space - i.e. room numbers, etc. are the same. Have you simply updated the name of the location in Location Authority? Or did you deactivate the old location, create a new location, and then "move" all of the objects to the new location to maintain the history? Thanks for your assistance!
