Dear Kathleen,
We update the constiuent record and add the old name as Alternate Name (labelled “previous/historic”), and then we update the location the location authority. That way I can still search the location
in TMS using the old constituent name.
Kind Regards,
Morten

Dear Kathleen,
I’ve also done the same with office locations which were originally named as the person who occupied that office (seriously!) I’ve renamed them under floor and room number and put the office name
in brackets in the description field.

We have experienced something like this. We used the existing location authority, changed the name, and put some notes in the location’s Description field such as “room previously known as the North
Gallery.”

Subject: Location name changes
Dear TMS Users:
I am wondering how other institutions have dealt with locations that have changed in name only.
We have an external location that has a new name, but nothing has physically changed with the space – i.e. room numbers, etc. are the same.
Have you simply updated the name of the location in Location Authority?
Or did you deactivate the old location, create a new location, and then “move” all of the objects to the new location to maintain the history?
Thanks for your assistance!
Best,
Kathleen
