TMS will not allow you to have two windows, or two instances of TMS opened simultaneously.
Joe is correct that you can remote into another machine, but that would use two concurrent licenses.
You can however open up the Thesaurus manager (from the start menu, not from the thesxref control) and use it to drag and drop terms into TMS, which is nice if you are applying terms to multiple records, or adjacent terms to a series of records.
You can also use the Package manager, in a separate window. The package manager has a feature called Synchronize Windows, which allows you to use a package to navigate through a selection of records.
I believe that the new generation of products, like Conservation Studio, do show users to have multiple windows open simultaneously.

As to multiple instances running of TMS, I cannot do that in TMS 2012. I have to run a remote desktop to another machine if I need that…most of my work with dual screens is used for dba items…so I can have TMS in one area and config tools in another.
