Subject: Home Locations

Colleagues, I  have a question concerning the use of home locations.

Does your institution assign home locations to objects in the collection? Historically, yes. Not as much now that our work is changing and we are handling our objects differently (more rotation, exhibitions, moves to new storage spaces, etc.)

Why did you decide to use or not use this feature? We have used Return to Home Location movements for purposes of recording annual inventory, so this is the biggest benefit to the use of Home Locations for us. But that’s been a challenge as we have begun moving things which have historically stayed in a location for a long time. We haven’t made a cut-and-dry decision to stop using home locations…but it seems to be happening.

What issues does your institution face as a result of this decision? No big impact as of yet.

How has this decision impacted staff workloads and their morale? None that I can see.

For comparison purposes, how large is your collection, and approximately how many movement trasactions occur on an average day? 28,000; maybe a dozen or so daily.

Thank you all for your time and input. ~Chad
