Alexandra,

If it helps, we only recently established a tracking method for frames.  We are not yet ready to begin tracking crates.

For frames we gave them a FR # (e.g. FR.001).  They will be classified under “Frames”, still working out the “Department” but for now they are residing under “General Collection”.

We do have an assortment of “artist materials” which are used by our conservation department for scientific study, and we are facing that as our next conundrum.  We have a classification of Artists’ Materials for accessioned items, cameras, palettes and the like.  Have you established methods for tracking this material?

Subject: Classifications for Non-Art Accessories and Equipment

Hi All,

We’re starting to track crates, frames, and equipment (AV and exhibition equipment) in TMS using individual object records.  For those of you that are already doing this, I’m wondering what classification you assign to these materials.  We want to limit the number of non-art related classifications in our authority list, but we also don’t want to get too general with a classification such as “miscellaneous”.

Any information would be very helpful!

Best,
