Through this publication the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and the Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program will be exploring the centrality of water in our lives. It’s an important global issue that we are examining in two traveling exhibitions: *H2O Today* and *Water/Ways*. Many of you have been actively involved with these tours. We appreciate your hard work and look forward to hearing about the impact of the exhibitions in host communities. The newsletter and exhibitions are part of a larger, on-going Smithsonian effort to join and highlight the discussions surrounding water which are already taking place in communities in various parts of the nation and larger world. As communities explore their ecological and cultural heritages and their civic responsibilities, what are the next steps to be taken? The aim of these two exhibitions is to provide not only an entryway into conversations which explore water issues from a cross-disciplinary perspective but also a national platform through which collaborators - communities, cultural institutions, local, state, and federal agencies - can share their experiences and best-practices. In this issue, we take a closer look at why water matters and highlight how communities in Florida and Minnesota are sharing water stories through the *Water/Ways* exhibit and local programming. In subsequent issues, we will continue to explore how the various communities who form the MoMS network have engaged in the various issues pertaining to their waterways and celebrated the vital role these waterways play in the health of their communities.
