We are also using the Prefix field instead of the Role for 'after'-type attributions.

Re: the idea of a drop-down controlled vocabulary for Prefix, we (with our currently-under-review-but-not-yet-cleaned or standardized data) seem to have a lot of instances where we need to catalog multiple roles for a single artist, when we're being granular. As we cannot assigned multiple roles via the Roles field, that is going into the Prefix field as well. Does anyone else deal with this differently? Or do you just add the same Constituent multiple times to capture multiple roles? Or is there a many-to-one capability in any of the Constituent assistant fields that I'm missing?

Dear List Serv,

How do you catalogue works "after" a particular artist in TMS?

Do you use a separate constituent role for After? Do you enter After in the Prefix field of the Object X-Ref field? Or, some other approach?

Many thanks,

Hi Merrianne,

We use the constituent role After. Using the prefix and suffix fields can
create awkward formatting in some displays and alphasort.

this for about 5 years now and have not encountered a problem doing it this
way.

Subject: Re: TMS - Data Standards - Cataloguing a work "after" another artist

Hi Merriane,

At the YCBA I manage roles and attribution qualifiers, such as "after" separately, because they have different semantics.
Roles, such as artist, printmaker, publisher,... are in the role drop down. Attribution qualifiers are not in that role drop down. For me TMS is missing a field here to manage attribution qualifiers, so I keep them handy in multiple places for the cataloguers mostly as a cheat sheet (in the thesaurus manager, function key, printed list, cataloguing manual in our intranet,...). That means that the cataloguers have to know them to use them and that takes some training.
Managing them separately is critical for us because when we export our data out of TMS, to LIDO XML and CIDOC-CRM RDF for linked open data, they are mapped separately to the LIDO schema and the CIDOC-CRM model. In general, being as granular as possible with your data is a good rule of thumb to make it shareable.
Getty's CDWA (which works hand in hand with LIDO byw) has great definitions for these 2 elements (CDWA calls attribution qualifiers creator qualifiers) http://www.getty.edu/research/publications/electronic_publications/cdwa/14creation.html<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.getty.edu_research_publications_electronic-5Fpublications_cdwa_14creation.html&d=CwMFaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=e507lsOLMLpNWxMc9GIaKxb-mxZhbMJ1mY6SLgDKU0A&m=V205rHYaAYLxCsNTi7Bc3GDeIAKyfNDEiZZLdAMmxiE&s=4tZH0XM9KtN9hs_hfAedMpTFogzzP0lE7L-gjsO0hyA&e=>

I hope that helps.

We enter "after" in the prefix field, but that is open for discussion as we are slowly addressing various areas of cataloguing here at WAM.

It does get clunky when you search for an artist and you get results, but they are prints of the paintings by a given artist, so it is sort of misleading.

Hi Merrianne,

On our side, we use the Alternate names to catalogue the attributions: Name type Attribution and suffix "d'après" or "attribué à". So in the record, under the constituent assistant, we choose the wanted name of the artist in the name field of the Cross-reference Information tab.

Like the YCBA, we also use role qualifiers in the Prefix field. And we also rely on a cheat sheet listing preferred terms for the qualifiers for each role (attached), which has always been challenging to enforce. We've always wanted a drop-down for these qualifiers!
