We also follow the same system (location, object status & checkbox). Our numbering format is V + YYYY + sequential number. For example, V2016.8.

Subject: Re: Virtual Object Numbering Systems

Hello Abby,

We use a sequential numbering system of a 8 digit number - 00000001. This does mean that we do not have part numbers and each separate object is given a separate number and we then rely heavily on the object links in TMS. Our virtual numbers therefore just have a V prefix denoting an imposed group record and all associated objects are linked as children.

We have repurposed a checkbox at the top of the object data entry screen to denote Virtual object and use a current location and object status to clearly identify a record as Virtual. In hindsight probably a bit of overkill but in keeping with consistency all records need an object status, location and an object number so the checkbox is probably the one that could be discontinued.

Subject: Virtual Object Numbering Systems

Hello All,

Would anyone be willing to share their numbering systems for virtual objects? It's not something we've really dealt with here and I'd like to know how some others are handling it before I try to write a style guide for it. We currently use a tripartite numbering system (2017.001.001) and use lower case letters in the case of components (2017.001.002-a).

Thank you for any help.

Best,

Abby
