Dear Friends,

On April 5-8, the Center for Science and Society is putting on a conference that will be important to all interested in the intersection of making and knowing, entitled “Weaving: Cognition, Technology, Culture.” On April 5-6, professional hand loom weavers will be leading demonstrations and providing opportunities to learn at the looms. On April 7-8, a conference will be held that will discuss questions about the economic, social, and cultural significance of weaving, as well as broader issues about craft as cognition, cognitive change over time, innovation in craft and the role of “traditional” crafts in the modern era. It will consider the preservation of craft practices and their cultures, as well sustainability and dignity in craft-making. The program brings together scholars from history, economics, sociology, anthropology, psychology and cognitive sciences, experts in textile and craft, textile entrepreneurs, artisans, and artists.

Please register for the conference here, and please forward information about the conference to anyone who may be interested.

Best,

Pamela
