Anne, SQL Server doesn't release memory because it figures if you are
running a query that needs 8GB RAM now, chances are you will need to repeat
the process later. Something about the process of returning memory to the
pool and then rerequesting it being too inefficient or something overly
technical that made my head spin.

You may want to reconfigure the MAX MEMORY in SQL Server. The formula
suggested by Jonathan Kehayias is take the total available RAM on the
server, remove 1 GB (for the OS), 1 GB for every 4 GB in the machine
between 4 and 16 GB, and 1 GB for every 8 GB in the machine above 16 GB
(See
https://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/jonathan/how-much-memory-does-my-sql-server-actually-need/
)

Once you have this number you can configure your server using the tutorial
here (https://community.rackspace.com/products/f/18/t/1693).

I hope this helps.
